Most of the county outside the municipalities permits through the Marion County building department, while Ocala, Belleview, and Dunnellon issue their own. Setbacks, driveway access, and how close you can build to a property line vary between them, which is worth knowing before you decide where the barn goes.
Florida’s building code treats certain nonresidential farm buildings on bona fide farms differently from other structures, but that exemption is narrower than most people assume and never covers anything with living space in it.
