Post frame: the workhorse for most properties
For garages, workshops, ag storage, horse barns, and most residential and farm uses, post-frame is the workhorse. It goes up efficiently, insulates deeply, handles wide door openings, and takes finishes well, which is why it is also the backbone of the barndominium movement. Built and engineered correctly, a post-frame metal barn meets Florida’s wind-load code just like any other permitted structure. Red iron: steel muscle for big spans
When the building gets big, the spans get wide, or the use gets heavy, structural steel earns its keep. Red iron buildings handle large clear-span interiors, tall eave heights, and commercial and industrial duty. Riding arenas, equipment buildings, and commercial shops often land here. Red iron costs more per square foot than post frame in typical sizes, which is why we recommend it when the project genuinely calls for steel rather than as a default.
What about bolt-together steel carports and kits?
You have seen the thin-tube steel carports and kit buildings sold off lots and websites. They have their place for basic vehicle cover, but they are a different product from an engineered barn: lighter gauge, smaller members, and often not designed for Florida’s wind zones at all.
